Artist Statement
My artistic journey is deeply rooted in the confluence of my upbringing in Maidenhead, UK and my current life in Emly, Co. Tipperary. "Borrowed Lines," my series of paintings, draws inspiration from the historical resilience of Japanese Boro textiles, once worn by peasants who transformed old garments into patchwork masterpieces. Mirroring the spirit of Boro, my artworks explore the beauty inherent in the discarded and forgotten, reflecting the evolving world around me.
In "Borrowed Lines," I layer paint on old boards, echoing the traditional Boro craft of patching and stitching textiles. This process becomes a visual narrative, carrying the history of prior incarnations and paying homage to sustainability. The encaustic technique, using heated beeswax, enhances the tactile quality of the paintings, symbolising the transformative nature of my creative process.
Contrasting this, my "Lost Cities" series takes on an abstract theme, constructing original artworks through a defined methodology. Influenced by my education and experiences, I merge imagery from various sources, exploring tensions within cityscapes. The heavily worked surfaces and closely guarded spacing in these paintings illustrate the complex intersections where coexistence demands respect and understanding.
Grounded in my educational background and experiences, I navigate the immediacy of our world with a sense of independence, often touching only the periphery of the structures supporting our everyday existence. Coexisting in a world deeply intertwined yet reliant on individuality, my paintings offer a visual exploration of the evolving tapestry of human experience, inviting viewers to contemplate the nuanced connections embedded within each piece.
